What's Kawasaki Beya

What is Kawasaki Beya Sumo Stable

Kawasaki Stable maintains its original function as a sumo stable, created by former wrestlers to allow people interested in sumo to experience its true essence and allure without the usual restrictions, operating as an open space. It also served as a facility used by wrestlers featured in the popular Netflix content, Sanctuary, for training. A traditional sumo stable refers to a place where wrestlers practice, run by a former wrestler serving as the master, with active wrestlers as his disciples, forming a group. With the master and his wife, the lady of the house, at the top, the wrestlers form a familial organization. This reflects the patriarchal characteristics of Asia, and especially Japan, where respect for one's superiors maintains order, a practice unchanged from ancient times to the present. This is because sumo is strongly tied to Japan's traditions, being a ritual dedicated to the deities worshipped in Shinto, Japan's indigenous religion, thus sumo must honor traditional spirits and forms. Therefore, sumo, valuing tradition and ceremonial aspects, comes with various restrictions. For example, women cannot enter the sumo ring, and visiting a sumo stable is not easily done. The sumo stable that became Kawasaki Stable traces its origins back to a prestigious lineage over 200 years old. Out of the nearly 50 sumo stables that exist today, most have experienced cycles of decline and revival. This stable was one of them, embodying the spirit that a prestigious lineage will always find someone to revive it. Kawasaki Stable was born in this historic location to remove taboos and widely spread the charm and traditions of sumo, transcending nationality, gender, and age in an ever-changing era. Collaborating with interpreters and guides from MagicalTrip, one of Japan's leading tour suppliers, the stable enables many people to experience sumo, despite many wrestlers not speaking English. Please support this unique initiative. And when you visit Japan, make sure to experience Kawasaki Stable for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you.
